 Happy Spring

Hello Fellow Tutors, Adult Learners, Literacy Friends:

As we move into the Spring season, our literacy community continues to grow, learn, and inspire. Thank you for the energy, dedication, and compassion you bring to every tutoring session, workshop, and class. Whether you are supporting a learner on their literacy journey or taking brave steps toward your own goals, your efforts are creating meaningful change across Yolo County.

Adult Literacy Outreach Update:
Yolo Reads has been steadily coordinating outreach efforts: Becky and Nancy presented at the Washington Adult School to showcase library services and resources available to adults and growing families. 25 people were in attendance. I am also happy to report that our mid-year CLLS report was successfully submitted and accepted.

County Librarian and Chief Archivist Diana Lopez, Family Literacy Specialist Leticia Flores, Outreach Specialist II Nancy Pacheco, Yolo Reads Assistant Becky McMannis, and Central Services Manager Elizabeth Gray.

The annual Yolo Reads Celebration was held on February 21 at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Library branch. Yolo Reads hosted a delightful lunch where tutors and learners connected, shared their experiences, and celebrated the program together. The event was made even more special by the attendance of our County Librarian and Chief Archivist, Diana Lopez.

We also featured an information table highlighting our embroidered Yolo Reads bookmarks, program accomplishments, and new Adult Reader materials developed through the Literacy and Learning Initiative Project in partnership with the Pacific Library Partnership.

A total of 13 tutors and learners attended the event.

Esperanza Crossing Public Housing

Family Literacy led cooking class held at Esparto Esperanza Housing
Family Literacy Coordinator Leticia Flores joins Esperanza Housing residents in an engaging, hands-on cooking class.
Esperanza Crossing: Esparto, California
Library Literacy Services: Family Literacy Outreach

Yolo County Library Literacy Services held two successful Family Literacy outreach events at Esperanza Crossing in Esparto.  Family Literacy provides a safe place for families to learn together.  Families share challenges and build trust with peers and their local library.

At the first workshop, on February 4th, residents were invited to participate in a family cooking class. This hands-on experience allowed participants to see how family literacy extends beyond traditional reading and writing. Families enjoyed the meal they created together—quite literally experiencing the rewards of their hard work and dedication.

On March 25th, the workshop featured a collaborative storytelling activity. Families walked through the room and wrote a sentence inspired by photos placed throughout. As each participant contributed, the stories grew, with each new sentence building on the previous one.

Feedback from Family Literacy participants has been extremely positive. Parents highlight the joy of sharing and learning together: “My goal: Sharing, communicating with my family; Being able to communicate with my family in a healthy fashion is key to family harmony.”

Read Across America

Nancy Pacheco visits Gibson Elementary second grade classroom
Nancy Pacheco participated in Read Across America by visiting a second-grade classroom at Gibson Elementary.

In March, Yolo Reads Program Coordinator Nancy Pacheco participated in the Read Across America celebration at Woodland’s Gibson Elementary School, sharing the joy of reading with local students. During her visit, Nancy read "Pee Wee the Lonely Kiwi" by Blair Cooper to an enthusiastic kindergarten class and "Dragons Love Tacos" by Adam Rubin to a lively group of second graders. The event provided a wonderful opportunity to promote early literacy, spark imagination, and connect with young readers in the community.

Today, Read Across America continues to evolve, emphasizing inclusive storytelling and equitable access to reading materials. It remains a cornerstone initiative for promoting literacy, bringing together educators, librarians, families, and volunteers to celebrate the power of reading in communities nationwide.

ESL Esparto Celebration | Spring 2026

On March 16th, the Yolo County Library Literacy Services and the Yolo County Office of Education celebrated the successful completion of a 10-week life-skills ESL course by adult learners in Esparto, CA. These classes offer significant benefits to rural residents, primarily by enhancing English vocabulary, increasing learners' ability to advocate for themselves and family members. The ESL Literacy program in Yolo County creates opportunities for adult learners to fully integrate and strengthen our community through common language. Notably, these adult learners have successfully completed approximately 30 hours of instructional time, classwork and homework while balancing their work and family responsibilities.

Congratulations to all our Espartos ESL learners and their families!
