Black History Month

A Century of Black Commemorations
Celebrate Black History Month February 2026. 100: A Century of Black History Commemorations
This year, 2026, marks 100 years of celebrating Black History. In 1925, Dr. Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History (ASNLH) established Negro History Week. This provided a platform to highlight Black people’s contributions throughout history, their influence on modern culture, and a reflection of how the Black community is viewed in society. In 1986, February was declared Black History Month by Congress. For this 100th year celebration, the ASNLH encourages you to explore the impact of Black history, community, and culture on our modern world. Throughout February, Yolo County Library branches will have a word search for children and a free bookmark for everyone to celebrate Black History, while supplies last.
