Lunar New Year

2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse
2026 Happy Lunar New Year. Red Chinese lanterns surrounded by gold stars in the top corners. Water pattern in the bottom corners. Two gold paper cut horses under 2026.
The Lunar New Year of 2026 marks the Year of the Horse, beginning on February 17, 2026, and ushering in the powerful Fire Horse year (火马年). Individuals born in a Fire Horse year are traditionally described as energetic, bold, and fiercely independent, with a strong desire to follow their own path. Known for their confidence, quick thinking, and charismatic presence, Fire Horses often stand out as natural leaders whose creativity, passion, and determination drive them toward meaningful achievements.

To celebrate the Year of the Fire Horse, Yolo County Library will offer two give-away crafts at all branches starting early January. Each craft kit includes supplies for making two movable horses and two paper Chinese luck knots (中国吉祥结 / 中国结), symbolizing good fortune, unity, and protection. Kits will be available while supplies last on a first-come, first-served basis.

Yolo County Library will also host a community celebration on February 7, 2026, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. at the Davis Veterans Memorial Center. The event will begin with dragon and lion dancing, followed by folk dances, ballet, music, and martial arts. The performers include members of the Chinese, Korean, and Filipino communities, as well as UC Davis students.
