Banned Books Week 2025

Freedom to Read, Freedom to Know
Banned Books Week Oct. 5-11, 2025. Censorship is so 1984. Read for your rights. ALA.org/BBooks.
In a time when more books are being challenged and removed from shelves than ever before, Banned Books Week 2025 serves as a solemn and urgent reminder: our freedom to read is not guaranteed unless we actively protect it.

This year, we focus on the power of books to inform, to connect, and to illuminate both the world around us and the truths within ourselves.

George Orwell’s 1984 warned of a world where truth is manipulated and access to information is controlled. Today, that warning feels less like fiction and more like a call to action.

We invite you to stand with the Yolo County Library and libraries everywhere in support of intellectual freedom:
  • Browse our displays of banned and challenged books…titles that have sparked dialogue, discomfort, and change;
  • Take home bookmarks and bibliographies highlighting books that others have tried to silence;
  • Pick up our limited-edition library card*, symbolizing our unwavering commitment to your right to read freely, without censorship or judgment.

Libraries exist to protect access to information, ideas, and the complex realities of the human experience. Join us as we defend the simple, but radical belief that every person has the right to choose what they read.

*The card is free for anyone getting their first card or $1 for anyone who wants to replace their existing card. WHILE SUPPLIES LAST.

California and Yolo County Celebrate 175 Years

Collage of aged written documents and a photogrpah of a Patwin woman holding a baby and standing next to her young daughter, all wearing cotton dresses from the 1850s. The Yolo County Archives and CA 175 logos are in the middle.
California became the 31st state 175 years ago on September 9, 1850. Did you know that during California’s first legislative meeting, the state was divided into 27 counties? Yolo County was one of those original counties! That makes our county 175 years old as well.

The Yolo County Archives celebrated by highlighting some of their collection items from the 1850s in a series on the Yolo County Library's Facebook and Instagram pages. Learn more about the early history of the county through these posts that highlight:
