Almond Fair

On February 22, Yolo Reads engaged with 187 patrons at the Esparto Almond Fair Family Fun Day through a variety of activities. Highlights included the Yolo Reads family literacy book giveaways, an AccuCut craft table, and an Archives Spotlight table. The Archives Spotlight featured Esparto's rich history, with a special focus on its connection to the Almond Fair, providing a fascinating glimpse into the community's heritage.

Serving Caregivers of Children

Hands in circle
Yolo Reads is making great progress with the Save the Children Grant. So far, we've met virtually with our group of 35 parents/caregivers and early childhood educators.  We’re set to complete the final three workshops in person. This is a significant achievement for our program, especially considering the challenges of building trust within our Spanish-speaking communities amidst the current political climate. At the end of the Save the Children grant, each participant will have attended five Early Literacy workshops and graduate with a valuable collection of early learning resources, including books, Montessori materials, puppets, felt storyboards, and new community connections.

Knights Landing Spring Party

On March 29th, Yolo Reads participated in the Knights Landing Library Branch Spring Party, where library visitors had the opportunity to enjoy a variety of activities. Attendees interacted with animals at the petting zoo, created their own birdhouse crafts, and selected a book to take home. Leticia Flores, our Family Literacy Program Coordinator, had the pleasure of engaging with over 25 families throughout the event.

English as a Second Language Graduation
Group of students with their certificate
Winters Community Library, Continuing ESL & Citizenship Class

On February 20, 2025, Yolo County Library Literacy Services concluded a new ESL course in Winters, CA. The Continuing ESL class differs from the other Library ESL classes in that this one is for learners who have previous English language learning. Library ESL classes in Knights Landing, Esparto, and South Davis are all beginning ESL classes.

Sixteen students committed to attending class twice a week; the students worked very hard on various English skills like reading, writing, listening, and speaking as well as learned topics related to U. S history and current events, which will prepare them to take their Citizenship test and become a US citizen through naturalization. They always showed up with a warm and joyful smile. The atmosphere that our ESL students created in the classroom was safe and empowering. They often worked in groups and pairs creating a special bond between the students.

One example is Virginia. She is currently in the process of becoming a US Citizen and has been a dedicated student. She has learned all the 100 questions required for the immigration test and practiced her conversing and writing skills. Virginia has made remarkable progress in her English skills.

Please join us in congratulating our ESL students, volunteers, and staff.
