Library Literacy Services Coordinator's Corner | | | Hello Fellow Tutors and Adult Learners, Happy New Year! Yolo Reads is starting 2024 with exciting news: we’ve been selected as the winner of the Winter Save the Children Grant! This generous grant will allow us to expand our family literacy program and serve even more community members in the coming year. As the students return to school after winter break, they are gradually settling back into classroom routines and expectations. To learn more about these expectations, reach out to our Family Literacy Coordinator, Leticia Flores. Leticia offers family literacy and engagement workshops where parents and caregivers can gain valuable insights into how to effectively communicate with their child’s school. Additionally, our learners receive books, games, and learning kits to support their growth. We are excited to announce that the Yolo Reads Annual Celebration will be held on Saturday, January 25th, at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Library! Virtual invitations were sent out in December, and paper invitations have just been delivered this week. We look forward to seeing you there in the large Children's Room! Winter is the perfect time for setting New Year learning resolutions. At Yolo Reads, we encourage our tutors and learners to advocate for their families' educational goals. Keep an eye out for additional information at your local library. A special thank you to all Yolo Reads tutors who actively participate in our Tutor Support Network meetings. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on February 11th at 1 p.m.! Yolo Reads Tutor Support Network Meeting https://yolocounty.zoom.us/j/82950488882 Meeting ID: 829 5048 8882 | | | | | First of all, thank you for giving me the opportunity to introduce myself and share my experience with the Yolo Reads program as an English learner. My name is Said Mostafa, and I am originally from Afghanistan. I have been participating in the Yolo Reads program for over a year. I first connected on Zoom with Becky McMannis, who provided me with guidance and introduced me to my new tutor, Aaron Needles. We started meeting weekly, using an English literacy workbook to complete readings and exercises step by step. These regular sessions greatly improved my speaking, listening, and writing skills, and had a positive impact on various aspects of my life, such as my job, doctor appointments, grocery shopping, and traveling. My wife also benefited from the Yolo Reads program. It is indeed a valuable resource for anyone looking to learn English as a second language. I highly recommend it to other immigrants with similar needs. I am sincerely grateful to the Yolo Reads staff, especially Becky McMannis, Nancy Pacheco, and my dedicated tutor, Aaron Needles, for their continuous support and encouragement each week | | Bogle Winery Book Collection | | The Yolo County Libraries Adult and Family Literacy Program, Yolo Reads, is thrilled to announce a wonderful collaboration with Bogle Winery this holiday season. Bogle Winery invited its wine club members and patrons to join us in spreading holiday magic by donating new books to support literacy in our Yolo County literacy community. This month-long book drive will benefit both adults and children. On Saturday, November 30th, Yolo Reads participated in Bogle's Merry Market, where we collected new book donations in exchange for a free wine tasting for up to four people. Thanks to the generosity of the community, we collected over 150 new books and are excited to continue accepting donations throughout December.
In appreciation of their ongoing support, we are excited to feature Bogle Winery on our organizations website, and in our upcoming e-newsletters, spotlighting their dedication to advancing literacy and education in Yolo County. | | Embroiders Guild of America Champions Literacy. | | Since 2014, the Embroiderers' Guild of America (Davis Chapter) has been creating beautiful embroidered bookmarks.
