Fall into Literacy with the Yolo County Library |
Hello Fellow Tutors and Adult Learners, Fall has begun! The kiddos are back in school and the leaves are falling. This time of year, students are learning classroom routines and expectations. If you want to learn more about school expectations, contact our Family Literacy Coordinator, Leticia Flores. Leticia holds family literacy and engagement workshops where our learners can discuss how to communicate with their child’s school. Our learners also receive books, games, and learning kits. Yolo Reads' Family Literacy Appreciation Celebration will be held at the Arthur F. Turner, West Sacramento Library on November 2nd! Invitations will be going out to our learners soon. Fall also brings along a feast of holidays and traditions. Enjoy the season by participating in the YCL Annual Costume Contest, October 28 - November 4th. Yolo Reads is counting on our tutors and learners to submit their Halloween or Dia de los Muertos costumes. Be on the lookout for further information at your local library. Thank you to all the Yolo Reads Tutors who attend and contribute to the Tutor Support Network meetings. We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting on October 15th at Noon. Yolo Reads Community Outreach |

This summer, our program participated in the Yolo County Fair. Our Yolo County Librarian, Diana Lopez, and Literacy staff greeted fair attendees from our booth in the Yolo County Children's Alliance Family Fun Place. Yolo Reads greeted over 2,000 fair-goers. Our spin wheel was a hit! We give away 463 books and countless bookmarks, pens, stickers, and small toys. Best of all, we recruited two tutors and one learner. |

Yolo Reads Adult & Family Literacy Assistant, Becky McMannis, shares a heartfelt learner story: I have been working with Jiwon since January 2023. She has been living in Davis while her husband studies at UC Davis. When I started to tutor Jiwon through Yolo Reads, she was pregnant with her first child and nervous about giving birth. Jiwon didn't know how to communicate or have the appropriate vocabulary related to her impending labor and delivery in America as she is from Korea. We discussed what vocabulary Jiwon could use to advocate for her medical needs, what she could expect, and how she could ask for what she wanted. Jiwon successfully gave birth and navigated through the first year of being a new mom. Jiwon is a dedicated student; her biggest challenge is confidence. When discussing a learning problem, she often finds a solution by engaging in learning strategies. Jiwon plans to return to Korea at the end of November, shortly after giving birth to her second child. I will miss her and our tutoring sessions, but Jiwon plans to return in the future as she feels welcome here and has grown to love Davis. |
