Spring into Literacy with the Yolo County Library |
Hello Fellow Tutors and Adult Learners, At the heart of successful literacy services are the relationships we build. Yolo Reads adult, family, and ESL programs are built on this foundation, providing a safe and encouraging environment for both learners and volunteers. We are proud to announce that our Yolo Reads Tutor, Lucia Kaiser, attended a recent train-the-trainer session from Literacy New York that featured materials from the Barbara Bush Foundation Digital Promise program. The train-the-trainer instruction focuses on how to use the guide and boost digital literacy for adult learners. The Barbara Bush Foundation has created an online Promoting Digital Literacy for Adult Learners: A Resource Guide. Lucia will share her experience with Digital Promise at our next Tutor Support Network meeting on June 11th from 12:00 pm to 1 pm. "It's important to be a present parent," says Elizabeth Tobon de Carlson. That's especially true when children are growing up in a culture different than the one in which their parents grew up. California Library Literacy Services family literacy and language learning programs help to reinforce family bonds. Click the video above or the button below to listen to Elizabeth talk about it. Remember, Yolo Reads has our very own family literacy specialist - don't hesitate to ask about our upcoming family literacy workshops. |

Yolo Reads Partners with Yolo County Office of Education |
|
Yolo County Library’s Yolo Reads Adult & Family Literacy Coordinator, Nancy Pacheco, provided more than 300 free age-appropriate, high-quality books for children to take home this summer. Yolo County’s Office of Education (YCOE) runs Head Start programs countywide and offers both Early Head Start (families with children 2 – 3 years old ) and regular Head Start (families with children 4 – 5 years old). The Head Start classrooms close for the summer at the beginning of June. Nancy purchased and distributed 335 books for the Head Start and Early Head Start students. Each child received a fun “Read” bag with 1 book, a YCL Summer Reading flyer, and information about Yolo Reads Adult & Family Literacy services. Katrina Hopkins and Lisa Vue at YCOE helped distribute the bags to all the Head Start students. They appreciated the quality of the books and that, for many of the children, this was their first brand-new hardcover book. We look forward to continuing to work together to help build children’s home libraries. |

Areli Duran is a first-generation college graduate from California State University, Sacramento. She migrated with her family at the age of 17 from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico. Her journey to adapt to a new country and to learn a second language is such a short period of time, it's proof that dedication and consistency are key to acquiring a new language. Her empathy and experience will help the ESL program understand the needs of our adult students. Areli is honored to be working with a community whose struggles are not so different from hers. As our New ESL Coordinator, she will be collecting data and connecting with our students to provide them with the best resources possible to succeed in their journey to acquire English as their second language. |
